Government of Jammu and Kashmir has issued a significant notification, designating the offices of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for the State Investigation Agency (SIA) in Jammu and Kashmir divisions as police stations. This decision, outlined in S.O. 543, aims to enhance the investigative capabilities of the SIA for handling specified cases.
According to the notification, issued under Section 2(1)(u) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, the government modified its earlier order (No. 286-Home of 2021, to strengthen the jurisdictional authority of the SIA. These police stations will now operate to register and investigate cases under the territorial jurisdiction of Division Jammu and Division Kashmir, respectively.
The move is expected to streamline investigations into sensitive cases handled by the SIA, a specialized agency tasked with probing high-profile and critical matters in the region.
The order was signed by Chandraker Bharti IAS, Principal Secretary to the Government, and directed to key administrative and law enforcement officials, including the Director General of Police, the Divisional Commissioners, and other senior officers.
This development is seen as a step toward bolstering the operational infrastructure of the SIA, enabling it to function independently as a law enforcement unit within the ambit of its investigative mandate.
