J&K Bank, RBI Launch Mega Financial Inclusion Campaign in Srinagar; Focus on Re-KYC and Digital Banking

Srinagar, July 10: Reinforcing its role as the Convener of the Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory Level Bankers' Committee (UTLBC), J&K Bank, in collaboration with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), on Friday organised the Mega Financial Inclusion Saturation Campaign–2026 at the Government College of Education, Srinagar, under the theme "Together Towards Financial Empowerment." The campaign brought together senior officials from the RBI, J&K Bank, the district administration, government departments, member banks, Banking Correspondents, students and members of the public to promote financial inclusion, strengthen financial literacy and accelerate access to banking and social security schemes across the Union Territory. Addressing the gathering, RBI Chief General Manager (Financial Inclusion and Development Department) Nisha Nambiar urged citizens to become informed and responsible banking customers by completing their Re-KYC formalities and adopting secure digital banking practices. She said Re-KYC is essential for ensuring uninterrupted access to banking services and noted that banks have simplified the process through digital channels. She also called upon participants to spread awareness so that no eligible beneficiary is left out of the financial inclusion framework. Prior to the inaugural session, Nambiar interacted with Banking Correspondents and bank officials at various exhibition stalls, appreciating their role in extending banking services to remote areas and stressing the need for expediting pending Re-KYC formalities to enhance customer service and strengthen the financial ecosystem. In his welcome address, J&K Bank Chief General Manager Imtiyaz Ahmed Bhat said financial inclusion extends beyond opening bank accounts and encompasses access to savings, insurance, pensions, digital payments, government welfare benefits and protection against cyber fraud. Highlighting the Union Territory's progress, he said Jammu and Kashmir has more than 2.5 million Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts supported by over 1.6 million RuPay Debit Cards. During the last financial year, banks opened 157,000 new PMJDY accounts, while enrolments under key social security schemes recorded growth of 31 per cent under PMSBY, 29 per cent under PMJJBY and 26 per cent under APY. Additional District Development Commissioner Srinagar Rifat Aftab Qureshi said the district administration remains committed to expanding access to formal financial services and ensuring the benefits of government-backed financial and social security schemes reach every eligible household. RBI Regional Director (Jammu) Chandrashekhar Azad said nearly 60 per cent of bank accounts in Jammu and Kashmir have completed Re-KYC, urging customers with pending updates to do so on priority. He also encouraged citizens to use the RBI's UDGAM Portal to locate and claim unclaimed deposits and other financial assets. Azad commended J&K Bank, in its capacity as UTLBC Convener, for organising the campaign and bringing together stakeholders to further strengthen the financial inclusion agenda in the Union Territory. The campaign focused on enrolment under Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Atal Pension Yojana (APY), activation of inoperative PMJDY accounts, generation of pending CKYC IDs, nomination updates, completion of Re-KYC, opening of PMJDY accounts for uncovered adults, and awareness on safe digital banking and cyber fraud prevention.
