Khor Nar Waterfall – The Hidden Jewel of Darhal Valley

By Zahid Shah

Rajouri, June 14:
Tucked away in the serene landscapes of Darhal Valley in Rajouri district, the Khor Nar Waterfall remains one of Jammu & Kashmir’s most breathtaking yet lesser-known natural marvels. Hidden within the peaceful confines of Budhkhanari Panchayat and cradled by the majestic Pir Panjal mountain range, this cascading beauty is surrounded by dense forests, lush meadows, and a thriving ecosystem.

Despite its mesmerizing charm, Khor Nar has yet to find a place on the tourism map. The absence of motorable roads and proper infrastructure has made the site largely inaccessible to the general public. Currently, visitors must undertake a demanding six-kilometre trek over rugged terrain—an adventure that deters families, elderly tourists, and casual nature lovers alike.

This lack of accessibility is the biggest hurdle in unlocking the area’s tourism potential. Improved road connectivity from Darhal to Budhkhanari and up to the waterfall could transform the region into a vibrant ecotourism hotspot. With basic infrastructure, the area could see a surge in eco-conscious visitors, fostering local employment and promoting cultural exchange.

Moreover, the omission of Khor Nar from the official Jammu & Kashmir Tourism App is a missed opportunity. Featuring it on digital tourism platforms would give this hidden gem the visibility it deserves and draw adventure seekers, photographers, and nature lovers from across India.

Local activist Tahir Mustafa emphasized the waterfall’s transformative potential:

> “Khor Nar is more than a scenic spot—it’s a symbol of what our region can become with the right attention. The youth are willing and ready to contribute, but we need investment, awareness, and infrastructure to move forward.”

His sentiments echo a broader belief among locals that Darhal Valley is rich in untapped potential—potential that could be harnessed through sustainable development, inclusive planning, and community participation.

Khor Nar is also ideally suited for community-led tourism. Eco-friendly additions such as marked trails, rest areas, signage, and waste disposal systems could ensure an enriching tourist experience while preserving the area’s pristine beauty. Training local youth as tour guides and encouraging homestays would keep the economic benefits within the community and foster a sense of ownership.

Notably, Khor Nar is part of a broader natural network that includes the nearby Abdullah Waterfall and forest trails—opening the door to a nature-based tourism circuit within the Pir Panjal range.

Beyond its natural splendour, Khor Nar represents a unique opportunity for rural development, environmental conservation, youth empowerment, and cultural revival. At a time when sustainable tourism is gaining momentum globally, neglecting such a valuable site in Jammu & Kashmir would be a significant oversight.

The District Administration and the J&K Tourism Department must act urgently—not only to provide better access and facilities—but also to ensure that Khor Nar Waterfall is duly recognized as a part of the region’s rich and diverse tourism offerings.
