News Report:
In a significant step toward strengthening India’s digital public infrastructure, the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), has enabled Passport Verification Records (PVR) on the DigiLocker platform. The development is expected to greatly enhance convenience, security, and accessibility for millions of citizens.
DigiLocker, a secure cloud-based service under the Digital India initiative, facilitates the issuance, storage, sharing, and verification of digital documents. The integration of PVR into its ecosystem marks yet another milestone in advancing paperless, contactless, and citizen-centric governance.
Officials said the new feature will allow citizens to access their Passport Verification Records directly from the “Issued Documents” section of their DigiLocker account once verification is complete. The digital records will be available on both the web portal and mobile application, eliminating the need for physical copies.
According to NeGD, the addition of PVR to DigiLocker will streamline processes across sectors such as travel, employment, and compliance by reducing paperwork and ensuring faster verifications. Since the documents are issued digitally by government systems, they remain tamper-proof, secure, and fully authentic, in line with DigiLocker’s trusted architecture.
The integration also enables instant, consent-based digital sharing of PVR with authorised institutions, removing the need for attested photocopies or repeated physical submissions. Officials noted that this will not only save time but also improve efficiency for organisations that rely on official verification documents.
By shifting passport verification workflows to a fully digital format, the initiative also supports environmentally responsible governance practices. The move aligns with the broader goals of the Digital India programme by reducing reliance on paper and promoting sustainable administrative processes.
The MEA and NeGD emphasised that the collaboration reflects a whole-of-government approach to modernising public services. The integration is expected to benefit a large volume of passport applicants and existing passport holders by enhancing transparency, improving service turnaround, and strengthening trust in digital governance platforms.
With the rollout of PVR on DigiLocker, the government continues to advance its citizen-first approach, making digital services more secure, efficient, and accessible across sectors.
