Srinagar, September 12, 2025:
In a bid to safeguard public health, Srinagar Police has launched a major crackdown on the sale of rotten and unhygienic meat across the district. The drive is being carried out in close coordination with the Civil Administration and the Department of Food Safety.
So far, six FIRs have been registered against butchers and shopkeepers found violating food safety regulations. The cases have been lodged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Food Safety Act at various police stations, including Lal Bazar, Bemina, Batamaloo, Safakadal, Ram Munshi Bagh, and Zakura.
To strengthen enforcement, a Flying Squad comprising police, food safety officers, and civil officials has been constituted. The squad is conducting surprise inspections across Srinagar, during which significant quantities of rotten meat have been recovered, seized, and destroyed in accordance with established procedures.
Police officials stressed that the campaign will continue until the illegal trade is completely curbed. “Srinagar Police is committed to protecting the health of citizens. Strict legal action will be taken against all violators indulging in practices that put lives at risk,” the statement read.
Authorities have also urged the public to remain alert and report any suspicious sale of unhygienic meat to the nearest police station or through official helplines.
