Then vs Now: The Transformation of Learning
Education in the 90’s and early 2000 was very different from today, especially in Kashmir. At that time, most parents were not highly educated and there was no internet, but still children studied seriously and parents played an important role in their upbringing. Teachers were respected and trusted. Parents did not interfere too much in schools or try to teach teachers how to teach.
Today, education has become more about competition and show off. Many parents think only expensive and famous schools can make the future of their children bright. Even when there are good schools in every locality, parents send their children 15 to 20 kms away from home. Children spend 2 to 3 hours daily in buses and traffic jams. This wastes their important time and also affects their health and peace of mind.
In earlier times, schools did not have many facilities, but students from those schools are today at very good positions in society. This proves that school alone cannot decide the future of a child. I believe school contributes only a small part. The biggest role is of parents and then the hard work of the child himself.
Nowadays, many parents keep children in a comfort zone. They should instead teach them punctuality, discipline, struggle, and respect. These things help children become better human beings and responsible citizens in the future. Education is not only about marks and jobs, it is also about learning how to live in society and help others.
Another problem today is that many parents stop children from mixing with society because they think it may affect their behaviour. But without understanding society, how will a child learn to face people and problems in future? Social interaction teaches children kindness, patience, confidence, and responsibility.
When children grow up away from society, many become selfish and think only about themselves. We should teach children how to contribute to society, help others, and understand humanity. That is the real education.
Today, because of the internet, knowledge is available everywhere. Parents can also help teach their children at home. So instead of only running after famous schools, we should focus more on the character, discipline, and overall growth of children.
Education should not become a business or status symbol. It should help in making good human beings for society.
