UT Ladakh Strengthens Industry Linkages to Boost Market Access for GI-Tagged Pashmina

JAMMU, Aug 1: In a significant initiative to strengthen market linkages for authentic GI-tagged Ladakh Pashmina, the Cooperatives Department, Union Territory of Ladakh, in coordination with the All Changthang Pashmina Growers Cooperative Society Ltd., on Saturday organised a one-day interaction-cum-seminar with members of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), textile entrepreneurs, industrial representatives, traders and buyers in Jammu. The programme was aimed at fostering direct business linkages between Pashmina producers and industry stakeholders to ensure better market access and improved returns for Changpa pastoralists. The seminar witnessed active participation from representatives of the textile and handicrafts sectors, who engaged with members of the Cooperative Society to explore opportunities for direct procurement of authentic GI-tagged Ladakh Pashmina. Deliberations focused on quality assurance, branding, value addition, market expansion and developing sustainable long-term business partnerships. Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner, Changthang, Nitish Rajora, IAS, described the Pashmina sector as the economic backbone of the Changthang region. He said direct engagement with industry stakeholders would help empower Changpa herders through transparent procurement systems, fair pricing and sustainable livelihood opportunities. He urged industrial stakeholders to establish long-term partnerships with the Cooperative Society and support the promotion of authentic Ladakh Pashmina in domestic and global markets. Representatives of the All Changthang Pashmina Growers Cooperative Society highlighted the Society's initiatives to strengthen procurement mechanisms, improve quality standards and enhance the income of Pashmina-producing families across Changthang. Members of CII and participating industrial representatives appreciated the exceptional quality of Ladakh Pashmina and expressed strong interest in developing direct sourcing arrangements and collaborative business models with the Cooperative Society. The interaction concluded with an extensive discussion between buyers and producers, allowing both sides to exchange views on market expectations, product quality and future avenues of cooperation. Deputy Registrar, Cooperatives, Ladakh, while delivering the vote of thanks, expressed gratitude to CII members, industrial representatives, buyers and other stakeholders for their active participation. He reiterated the commitment of the Cooperatives Department, UT Ladakh, to strengthening market linkages for Ladakh Pashmina and ensuring that the benefits of value addition and expanded market access reach the Changpa herders, the traditional custodians of this unique natural fibre.
