JAMMU: Dr Sunil Bhardwaj, a young academician turned politician from the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, has emerged as a prominent public representative after being elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Ramnagar Assembly Constituency in 2024. Representing the Bharatiya Janata Party, Dr Bhardwaj is widely regarded for blending academic insight with grassroots political engagement.
Born and raised in Village Chanunta in the hilly region of Ramnagar in Udhampur district, Dr Bhardwaj’s early life was shaped by the realities of rural living. Growing up in a mountainous area, he witnessed challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited healthcare access, and constrained educational opportunities. These formative experiences strengthened his resolve to work for rural development and public welfare.
Coming from a modest family background, Dr Bhardwaj developed a deep inclination toward education from an early age. His upbringing in a socially and culturally vibrant rural community instilled values of discipline, hard work, and commitment to national service.
Inspired by the teachings of B. R. Ambedkar and Swami Vivekananda, Dr Bhardwaj pursued higher education with distinction. He completed his MBA and M.Com before earning a Doctorate in Finance (Ph.D.). In 2010, he qualified the UGC Junior Research Fellowship, marking a significant milestone in his academic career.
Dr Bhardwaj later joined the Department of Management at the University of Jammu as an Assistant Professor. During his tenure in academia, he remained actively involved in teaching, research, and mentoring doctoral scholars. He also served in various administrative roles within the university and contributed to academic discourse through conferences and developmental initiatives. His academic specialization provided him with a strong understanding of macroeconomics, management, finance, and public administration.
Alongside his academic pursuits, Dr Bhardwaj remained actively involved in nationalist student activism. During his college years, he worked as a dedicated activist of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), where he served in different organisational capacities. In 2019, he became associated with the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP.
His ideological orientation has been shaped by the philosophy of Swami Vivekananda and the principles of cultural nationalism. Known for his emphasis on discipline, national unity, and promotion of Indian cultural values, Dr Bhardwaj advocates the idea of “Unity in Diversity,” viewing India’s civilisational heritage as a foundation for national progress.
Driven by the desire to contribute directly to public welfare, Dr Bhardwaj entered active electoral politics with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Recognizing his educational credentials, leadership qualities, and grassroots connect, the party nominated him as its candidate from the Ramnagar constituency in the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections.
He went on to win the election with a significant margin, marking the beginning of his legislative career and establishing himself as a key political voice for the region.
As an elected representative, Dr Bhardwaj represents a new generation of leaders who combine academic knowledge with practical governance. His development agenda focuses on strengthening rural infrastructure, expanding educational opportunities, promoting entrepreneurship, modernizing agriculture, and improving healthcare services, particularly in the hilly and remote areas of Ramnagar.
From a small village in Ramnagar to the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir, Dr Sunil Bhardwaj’s journey reflects perseverance, dedication to education, and commitment to public service. As both an academician and a political leader, he continues to work toward the socio-economic upliftment of his constituency and broader development goals aimed at building a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.
