Centre Notifies Census (Amendment) Rules, 2026, Expands Eligibility for Enumerators
New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs has introduced the Census (Amendment) Rules, 2026, under the Census Act, 1948, revising the eligibility criteria for the appointment of census enumerators.
The Ministry issued a Gazette notification announcing the amendment, which expands the categories of individuals eligible to be engaged in census-related duties.
Under the revised rules, teachers, government officials, staff of local authorities and other suitable persons identified by the respective state governments or Union Territory administrations can be appointed as enumerators.
