DMO Srinagar Leads Plantation Drive at Mine Sites to Advance Sustainable Mining and Environmental Restoration

Srinagar, June 5: The District Mineral Office (DMO), Srinagar, on Friday conducted a plantation drive at three mining sites under the nationwide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable mining practices and environmental conservation. The plantation drive was carried out at Sekinar Mine, Samman Limestone Mine, and Tulpal Mine in compliance with directives issued by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India. The initiative was led by District Mineral Officer Srinagar, Mohsin Noor, who oversaw the planting of Pinus roxburghii (Chir Pine) saplings across the three sites. The plantation activity aimed to promote ecological restoration, strengthen slope stabilization measures in post-mining areas, and contribute to environmental sustainability. Chir Pine, a native Himalayan species, was selected for its ability to stabilize degraded slopes, reduce soil erosion, and support carbon sequestration. Speaking on the occasion, the District Mineral Officer highlighted the department’s commitment to implementing concurrent reclamation measures in accordance with approved Mine Closure Plans. He said the initiative reflects a broader effort to integrate mineral development with environmental responsibility and long-term ecological protection. The drive witnessed participation from Atul Bhandekar, Head of Samman Mine; Mysar Khan, Mines Manager and Head of Sekinar and Tulpal Mines; Javed Ahmed, Mine Geologist; along with leaseholders and field staff, ensuring community involvement in the environmental initiative. Officials said all saplings planted during the drive have been geo-tagged and will be monitored through the department’s e-surveillance mechanism to assess survival and growth. Detailed site-wise documentation of the plantation programme is also being submitted to the Ministry of Mines as part of the prescribed reporting process. The initiative underscores the Union Territory Administration’s focus on environmentally responsible mining and supports the objectives of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign by promoting greener and more sustainable development practices.
