Baramulla, June 5: Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Ghulam Ali Khatana on Friday said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is playing a leading role in global climate change initiatives and environmental protection efforts.
Khatana made these remarks while participating in a plantation drive organised at Government Degree College Boniyar in Baramulla on the occasion of World Environment Day.
Addressing students, faculty members and officials present at the event, the Rajya Sabha MP highlighted India's commitment to renewable energy, sustainable development and international cooperation in addressing climate change challenges. He said the country's environmental policies and clean energy initiatives have strengthened its position as a key global stakeholder in sustainable development.
Emphasising the importance of afforestation, Khatana described trees as the “lungs of the Earth” that absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. He said plantation drives play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, protecting the environment, preventing soil erosion and conserving biodiversity.
The MP noted that the Government of India's efforts to promote renewable and clean energy have yielded significant results and contributed to the country's emergence as a global leader in sustainable development. He added that the vision of “Viksit Bharat” reflects a balanced approach to environmental protection, technological advancement and industrial growth.
The plantation drive was organised by Mushtaq Noshari and witnessed participation from Principal Prof. Rehmat Syed, members of the teaching faculty, students and officials of the Forest Department. Participants collectively planted saplings and reaffirmed their commitment to environmental conservation.
The programme concluded with a call for greater public participation in plantation drives and the adoption of sustainable practices to ensure a greener and healthier future for coming generations.
