Grand Mufti Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam Opposes Waqf Directive on Friday Sermons, Calls for Protection of Religious Autonomy

Srinagar: Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam Farooqi, has strongly objected to the decision of the Waqf authorities to prescribe a specific subject for Friday sermons delivered by Imams and Khateebs, stressing that religious affairs must remain free from political interference. Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam maintained that Friday sermons are an integral part of Islamic guidance and must be delivered in accordance with Shariah, Islamic principles and the religious responsibilities of Imams and Khateebs. He emphasised that any directive concerning the content of sermons requires careful consideration and meaningful consultation with established Islamic authorities. He asserted that Shariah must not be used as an instrument of political propaganda and that the pulpit should not become a platform for advancing the agenda of any political party or organisation. Matters relating to Islamic teachings and religious guidance, he said, must remain focused on spiritual enlightenment, moral values and the welfare of society. The Grand Mufti further stressed that the administrative responsibilities of the Waqf authorities should not be interpreted as an unrestricted mandate to determine the nature and content of religious discourse. He underlined the importance of respecting the autonomy of religious institutions and preserving the dignity and sanctity of the pulpit. “We will not remain silent when matters of Shariah and religious autonomy are affected by decisions taken without adequate consultation,” Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam said. He reiterated that the pulpit must continue to serve as a source of spiritual guidance, moral responsibility and service to humanity rather than being used as an instrument of political messaging. The Grand Mufti's objection underscores the need for dialogue and consultation between the Waqf authorities and established Islamic scholars on matters concerning religious practices, while ensuring that administrative decisions respect Islamic principles and the independence of religious guidance.
