Srinagar, Dec 02 — Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, on Tuesday stated that the Kashmir Valley is unlikely to witness any significant snowfall until December 15.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Ahmad said that the overall weather for early December is expected to remain largely dry. “There is no major snowfall expected till December 15. Except for a few weak disturbances, no significant snowfall activity is likely,” he added.
He also provided an update on the ongoing La Niña phase, which continues to influence both global and regional weather patterns. “La Niña is still active, but it is expected to weaken from January onwards. We anticipate it entering a weaker phase as the winter progresses,” he noted.
Despite the lack of major snowfall, the Valley is experiencing severe cold, with night temperatures falling well below freezing in many areas. Srinagar recorded a low of –2.5°C, down from –1.9°C the previous night, while Shopian remained the coldest place at –5°C.
Other areas recorded sub-zero temperatures as well: Qazigund –2.4°C, Kupwara –3.1°C, and Kokernag –0.6°C. Popular tourist spots Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded –2.2°C and 0°C, respectively.
As winter deepens, residents are bracing for harsher conditions in the coming weeks. MeT officials have advised the public to stay updated with regular weather forecasts. “We are closely monitoring all systems, and any significant changes in weather patterns will be communicated promptly,” Dr. Mukhtar added.
