New Delhi, May 29 (ANB):
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted the Northeast, including Sikkim, as a key contributor to India's progress. Speaking virtually at the Sikkim @50 event, the Prime Minister emphasized the Centre’s strong commitment to supporting Sikkim’s development and positioning it as a global tourist destination.
According to the Associated News Bureau (ANB), Modi underscored the transformative infrastructure developments in the state. He noted that the Sevoke-Rongpo railway line will soon link Sikkim to the national railway network. Additionally, nearly 400 kilometres of national highways have been built in the state over the past decade.
In rural regions, over 100 kilometres of new roads have been laid. The Atal Setu bridge has significantly improved connectivity between Sikkim and Darjeeling, he added.
Reaffirming his government’s commitment to inclusive growth, Modi recalled the 2014 slogan, “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” (Together with all, development for all). He stressed the importance of equitable development across all states and regions to achieve the goal of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India).
“Every region of India has unique strengths,” said the Prime Minister. “Our government has brought the Northeast to the forefront of development with an ‘Act East’ policy executed with an ‘Act Fast’ approach.”
Reflecting on Sikkim’s journey since it joined the Indian Union 50 years ago, Modi praised the state for its steady progress. “Fifty years ago, Sikkim chose a democratic path. Today, the trust of every Sikkimese citizen has strengthened, and their contributions are visible in the state's remarkable growth,” he said.
The Prime Minister lauded Sikkim’s leadership in organic farming, pointing out its efforts in organic fish cultivation as well. He said that Sikkim is setting an example for the rest of the country in sustainable agriculture and should aim to become a global green model state in the next 25 years.
Recognising the role of Sikkim’s youth and sports icons, Modi expressed confidence that the region would significantly contribute to India’s aspiration of becoming a global sporting powerhouse. ANB
