Leh, October 24: A programme marking the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), titled “RSS@100: Vision and Mission — Organising Society, Building Character, Serving Bharat,” was held in Leh on Saturday, bringing together speakers and participants for deliberations on national service, cultural heritage, social harmony and the role of individual character in nation-building. His Eminence Palga Rinpoche attended the programme as the Chief Guest, while Dr. Manmohan Vaidya, National Executive Member of the RSS, delivered the keynote address. The introductory address was delivered by Padma Shri Dr. Padma Gurmeet, Vibhag Sanghchalak, Ladakh Vibhag. Dr. Dawa Wangmo, Assistant Professor in the Department of International Relations at the University of Ladakh, moderated the proceedings. Addressing the gathering, Palga Rinpoche underscored the importance of understanding Bharat’s ancient civilisation, upholding its cultural values and fostering a strong sense of national responsibility. He also highlighted the dedication and sacrifices of Indian Army personnel in safeguarding the country, particularly under the challenging geographical and climatic conditions of Ladakh. Appreciating the RSS’s century-long journey, Rinpoche acknowledged its contributions to social service and nation-building, emphasising the importance of collective responsibility and commitment to the welfare of society. In his keynote address, Dr. Manmohan Vaidya elaborated on the concept of Panch Parivartan (Five Transformations), highlighting character development, social harmony, collective responsibility and the need to strengthen public understanding of Bharat’s historical and civilisational legacy. He also spoke about Bharat’s historical economic strength, indigenous skills and the significant contributions of women to the country’s social, cultural and economic development. Emphasising that national commitment must be reflected in everyday conduct, Vaidya called for translating values and ideals into meaningful action for the benefit of society and the nation. The message “Bharat ko maano, phir jaano” (Recognise Bharat, then understand it) highlighted the importance of appreciating the country’s civilisational significance, historical legacy, cultural traditions and diverse contributions. Drawing upon the patriotic sentiment expressed in “Saare Jahan Se Achha, Hindustan Hamara,” the keynote address emphasised the need for citizens to actively contribute to nurturing, protecting and strengthening the nation through responsible participation and dedicated service. The deliberations highlighted the interconnected roles of social organisation, individual integrity, discipline, mutual respect and sustained public service in building a harmonious and self-reliant society. Participants also discussed the importance of preserving cultural heritage, promoting indigenous knowledge, supporting education and encouraging constructive community participation. The programme placed these themes in the context of Ladakh’s distinctive cultural heritage, challenging geographical environment and strategic significance, underlining the importance of social cooperation, intergenerational learning and responsible citizenship. The centenary programme concluded with a renewed emphasis on national pride, social unity, cultural awareness, respect for the armed forces and dedicated service to the nation. The central message of RSS@100 was that nation-building is a continuous process, requiring individual responsibility, collective effort and a sustained commitment to the welfare of society. The programme underscored that the ideals of organising society, building character and serving Bharat must be reflected in the everyday actions and responsibilities of citizens. ANB
