Seven of a Family Killed in Reasi Landslide, DDC Vice Chairperson Expresses Grief

Reasi, August 30: In a devastating tragedy, seven members of a single family were killed when a massive landslide, triggered by relentless rainfall, buried their home in Baddar village of Mahore tehsil, Reasi district, in the early hours of Saturday.

According to officials, the house belonging to Nazir Ahmed, son of Bahar Din, was completely reduced to rubble under the heavy debris. Nazir Ahmed (38) and his wife, Wazira Begum (35), perished alongside their five children — Bilal Ahmed (13), Mohd Mustafa (11), Mohd Adil (8), Mohd Mubarak (6), and Mohd Wasim (5).

Rescue teams comprising police, SDRF personnel, and local volunteers rushed to the scene but were unable to save the victims. After hours of painstaking efforts, the bodies were recovered from the wreckage.

The incident has once again underscored the growing vulnerability of mountainous belts like Mahore to natural disasters during the monsoon season. Frequent landslides, cloudbursts, and flash floods have already claimed numerous lives across Jammu and Kashmir in recent years, raising urgent concerns about disaster preparedness and the safety of families living in remote hilly areas.

Expressing deep anguish over the tragedy, Vice Chairperson of District Development Council (DDC) Reasi, Adv. Sajra Qadir, said in a condolence message:
“I am deeply shocked and saddened to learn about the tragic loss of seven precious lives in the devastating landslide at Baddar village. An entire family has been wiped out, leaving behind unbearable pain for the community. On behalf of the DDC Reasi, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved relatives and pray to Almighty Allah to grant eternal peace to the departed souls and courage to the family and community to bear this irreparable loss.”

She further assured that the district administration has been directed to extend all possible relief and support to the survivors and affected community, adding that the people of Mahore will not be left alone in this hour of grief.

The tragedy has plunged Reasi and adjoining areas into mourning, with residents gathering at the site to express solidarity with the bereaved family. Special prayers are being held across the district for the departed souls, as the community struggles to come to terms with the enormity of the loss.
