Srinagar, Jan 15, ANB: The Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has issued a public advisory highlighting the increased risk of Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (AE-COPD) during the harsh winter months in Kashmir. AE-COPD is characterized by worsening respiratory symptoms such as increased dyspnea, cough, and sputum production, a copy of advisory in possession of Associated News Bureau.
According to the advisory, AE-COPD can escalate within 14 days and is often accompanied by symptoms like tachypnea and tachycardia. Common triggers include infections, air pollution, and extreme cold, which cause heightened local and systemic inflammation.
Safety Tips to Prevent Respiratory Illnesses
Do’s
- Hygiene and Protection: Frequent handwashing and keeping the nose and mouth covered when outdoors.
- Stay Warm: Layering clothes and staying indoors during freezing temperatures.
- Hydration and Fitness: Drink plenty of fluids and engage in indoor physical activities.
- Vaccinations: Get vaccinated against flu and pneumonia to reduce infection risk.
- Medication Compliance: Regular use of prescribed inhalers and following a COPD action plan.
Don’ts
- Avoid Smoking and Smoke Exposure: Smoking exacerbates respiratory conditions.
- Limit Outdoor Exposure: Especially in severe cold without adequate protection.
- No Medication Skipping: Always carry a rescue inhaler if prescribed.
- Avoid Space Heater Misuse: Ensure proper ventilation to prevent indoor air hazards.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Patients are advised to report to the hospital if they experience:
- Increased coughing or sputum production.
- Changes in sputum color or new-onset fever.
- Oxygen saturation below 88% or significant drop from baseline levels.
- Uncontrolled symptoms disrupting daily activities.
Home Oxygen Therapy Guidelines
The advisory also suggests initiating home oxygen therapy if oxygen saturation falls below 88%, targeting levels of 88%-92% as measured by a pulse oximeter.
