Army Pays Tributes To Tashi Namgyal, The Man Who Alerted Indian Forces About Pakistani Intrusions In Kargil

Leh, Jan 15, ANB: On the occasion of the 77th Army Day, the Indian Army immortalised the contribution of Tashi Namgyal in defending the borders of Ladakh by placing a remembrance plate at the Biamah War Memorial.

According to the Associated News Bureau, Tashi Namgyal, a resident of Garkon Village in Ladakh’s Aryan Valley (Batalik), played a pivotal role during the 1999 Kargil War by alerting the Indian Army about Pakistani intrusions. In May 1999, while searching for his missing yaks, he observed individuals in black Pathani attire constructing bunkers atop the Jubar Ridge. Recognising the gravity of the situation, Namgyal promptly informed the nearest unit of the Indian Army which led to swift and effective military response that was instrumental in Kargil victory.

Post Kargil War, Tashi Namgyal continued to motivate community members through narration of Indian Army’s actions during Kargil War. He continued to participate regularly in commemorative events of Kargil War Victory, including the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas in Dras in 2024.

On December 17, 2024, Tashi Namgyal passed away in his native village Garkon and is survived by his wife, daughter and two sons. Indian Army remains steadfast in its support to Tashi Namgyal’s family as a tribute to his unparalleled dedication.

On the occasion of Army Day 15 Jan 2025, Indian Army conducted a tribute ceremony befitting his patriotism along with placing a remembrance plate at Biamah War Memorial. Civil and Military Dignitaries and community members along with his family members gathered to pay tribute to Late Shri Tashi Namgyal. Also, the institution of a bust at his native village Garkon is planned this year to commemorate his contribution to the nation as his legacy continues to inspire future generations. (ANB)
