Ministry of Railways Launches Amrit Bharat Station Scheme for Redevelopment of 1,337 Stations

New Delhi, 10 Dec 2025: The Ministry of Railways has launched the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, aimed at the comprehensive redevelopment of railway stations with a long-term, phased approach.

Under the scheme, master plans will be prepared for each station and implemented in phases. Key aspects of redevelopment include improved access and circulation, better integration with city areas, upgraded station buildings, modern waiting halls, toilets, seating, water booths, wider foot over bridges, lifts, escalators, platform improvements, local product kiosks under “One Station One Product,” parking and multimodal integration, facilities for Divyangjans, enhanced passenger information systems, executive lounges, business meeting spaces, landscaping, and other passenger-centric amenities.

The scheme also emphasizes sustainable and environment-friendly solutions, including ballastless tracks where necessary, and envisions creating a city centre around major stations in the long term.

So far, 1,337 stations have been identified for development, with works at 155 stations already completed. Selection of stations is based on proposals from zonal railways, and their location in major cities or tourist and pilgrimage destinations.

Funding for station redevelopment is primarily provided under Plan Head-53 ‘Customer Amenities’, with an allocation of ₹12,118 crore for 2025-26, and expenditure of ₹7,253 crore incurred up to October 2025. Additionally, 15 stations have been shortlisted for development under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode, with possible expansion based on lessons learned.

The Ministry is committed to preserving heritage structures and artifacts, and redevelopment projects take into account technological improvements, safety, and operational challenges such as utility shifting, speed restrictions, and statutory clearances including fire, heritage, and airport approvals.

Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, shared this information in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today, highlighting that development of stations is a continuous process and will prioritize higher-category stations based on inter-se priorities and availability of funds.
