Punjab Delegation Seeks Technical Solution to Ujh River Flooding from LG Sinha
Jammu, August 20, 2026: A public delegation from Punjab, led by Ajnala MLA S. Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, called on Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha and apprised him of the recurring monsoon overflow of the Ujh River, which has been affecting several parts of Punjab.
The delegation urged the Lieutenant Governor to take up the issue with the Prime Minister of India and the Union Minister for Jal Shakti for exploring the construction of a suitable dam or reservoir on the Ujh River, or any other technically feasible measure for flood moderation.
It proposed that the feasibility of such an intervention be assessed through a comprehensive technical study followed by preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR).
The delegation said that an appropriately designed project could help regulate the flow of the Ujh River and reduce the impact of flooding in several districts of Punjab, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur and Amritsar, particularly Ajnala Sub-Division.
It further pointed out that a reservoir could enable the storage of excess monsoon water for future use. The project, subject to technical and environmental feasibility, could also create opportunities for hydroelectric power generation, tourism, water sports and other recreational activities.
The delegation emphasised that a long-term intervention for managing Ujh River waters could strengthen the region's flood resilience, improve water management and contribute to sustainable economic development.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha assured the delegation that the matter would be given due consideration and taken up with the concerned authorities for technical evaluation.
