Speaker Seeks Definite Timeline for Government Vehicle Management Policy

Srinagar, September 24: Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather has taken serious note of the delay in finalising and implementing the proposed Government Vehicle Management Policy, 2026, and directed the Government to place a definite timeline before the House during the ongoing Autumn Session. The issue came up during Question Hour in response to a question on the “One Officer-One Vehicle” policy raised by MLA Ranbir Singh Pathania. Replying to the question, Minister for Transport Satish Sharma informed the House that the Government, through the General Administration Department, had constituted a committee to examine the existing Car/Vehicle Policy and make recommendations for its revision. The Minister further stated that following deliberations by the committee, a draft Government Vehicle Management Policy, 2026 had been prepared and was currently under consideration by the department. Taking note of the delay, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather said the matter required expeditious consideration. He directed the Minister to apprise the House, during the ongoing Session, of a clear timeline for finalising and implementing the policy. The Speaker emphasised the need for the Government to place its position clearly before the House so that members are informed about the proposed timeframe for giving effect to the policy. The direction comes in the backdrop of the need for effective management and rationalisation of government vehicles, as well as timely communication of policy decisions to the legislature. The Government is now required to provide the House with a definite timeline for finalisation and implementation of the Government Vehicle Management Policy, 2026 during the current Session. ANB
