Rediscovering Dobjan
Located 70 kilometers south of Kashmir along the historic Mughal Road, Dobjan stands at an altitude of over 9,000 feet. It is adorned with towering pine trees, therapeutic hot springs, and majestic snow-laden landscapes.
Despite its surreal beauty, the area has remained in the shadows, overshadowed by Kashmir’s more prominent tourist hubs like Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
For years, Dobjan’s beauty has been hindered by a lack of adequate infrastructure, unreliable mobile connectivity, and minimal promotional efforts. Recognizing these challenges, Dar’s leadership brought together resources and stakeholders to organize this year’s snow festival, celebrating the region’s rich cultural heritage.
Themed around the beloved Kashmiri love legend of Heemal-Nagrai, the festival offered a plethora of activities designed to engage and enchant visitors. From snow sculpting competitions and skiing to thrilling snow cricket matches, the event provided a perfect blend of adventure and art. Additionally, local handicrafts and traditional cuisines added an authentic touch, immersing visitors in the cultural tapestry of the region.
Dar’s active involvement in the festival—from planning to execution—underscored his commitment to making a difference. “This festival is a stepping stone towards unlocking Dobjan’s potential and ensuring that the benefits reach every household in the area,” he remarked.
The Push for Off-Beat Destinations
Kashmir welcomed approximately 3 million tourists in 2024, with a 10-12% rise in foreign visitors. However, the majority gravitated toward established destinations, leaving lesser-known locales like Dobjan underexplored. Recognizing this disparity, the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department has intensified efforts to promote off-beat destinations, including Mughal Road, Daksum, Sinthon Top, Gurez, and Lolab.
These hidden gems, including Dobjan, boast a unique charm and have the potential to become major attractions if provided with the necessary support. Last year’s snowfall highlighted their appeal, contrasting sharply with the near snowless conditions in the Valley’s mainstream tourist spots. (ANB)
