BJP Draws Large Gathering in Lal Chowk, Signals Growing Political Footprint in Kashmir , Massive Srinagar Rally Highlights BJP’s Expanding Outreach, While Public Discontent with NC Government Comes Into Focus
Srinagar, September 2 (ANB): In what could prove to be a significant political development in Kashmir, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday drew a sizeable gathering of party workers and supporters in the heart of Srinagar, with a large number of people assembling around the historic Ghanta Ghar at Lal Chowk.
The gathering assumes political significance as the BJP has traditionally faced a challenging political environment in the Valley. The sizeable turnout at Lal Chowk, the commercial and political heart of Srinagar, is being viewed within political circles as an indication of the party’s expanding organisational presence and growing visibility in Kashmir.
The demonstration was organised against the policies and functioning of the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference government, with BJP leaders accusing the administration of failing to fulfil several commitments made to the people during the Assembly election campaign.
Addressing the gathering, Leader of Opposition in the J&K Legislative Assembly and senior BJP leader Sunil Sharma launched a sharp attack on the government, alleging that several major electoral promises remained unfulfilled.
Sharma referred to commitments concerning employment, electricity and public welfare, including the promise of providing 1 lakh jobs and 200 units of free electricity. He alleged that the government had failed to deliver on these assurances after assuming office.
The BJP leader also criticised the increase in electricity tariffs, claiming that higher power bills had added to the financial burden on ordinary households.
The scale of the gathering at Lal Chowk, meanwhile, has provided fresh political talking points in Kashmir. BJP leaders are likely to view the turnout as evidence of the party’s increasing acceptance and organisational consolidation in the Valley.
For the first time, according to BJP leaders, such a sizeable party mobilisation has been witnessed at Lal Chowk, giving the demonstration added political significance. The development may also indicate that the BJP is seeking to expand its political footprint beyond its traditional areas of influence in Jammu and establish a more visible presence in Kashmir.
At the same time, the protest has brought another issue into focus—the level of public satisfaction with the present NC-led administration.
While the size of a political gathering cannot by itself be treated as a definitive measure of public opinion, the participation at Lal Chowk and the issues raised during the protest could indicate growing political contestation over the performance of the Omar Abdullah government.
The BJP has increasingly focused its criticism on employment, electricity tariffs, public services and other issues affecting daily life, seeking to portray the NC government as having fallen short of its electoral commitments.
The National Conference, however, continues to defend its governance agenda and has maintained that it is committed to addressing the concerns and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The parallel political developments underline a changing contest in Jammu and Kashmir, where the BJP is attempting to strengthen its presence in Kashmir while the NC government faces increasing scrutiny over its electoral promises and performance.
Wednesday’s mobilisation at Lal Chowk could therefore emerge as an important moment in the evolving political narrative of Kashmir, particularly if the BJP succeeds in sustaining such grassroots mobilisation in the Valley in the months ahead. ANB
