GMC Srinagar Department of Medicine Pays Tribute to Prof. Mohammad Yousuf Bhat

Srinagar, October 3: ANB: The Postgraduate Department of Medicine, Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, held a condolence meeting on Saturday to pay tribute to Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Yousuf Bhat, former Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine, who passed away recently. The meeting was held in the Department Seminar Room and was attended by Prof. (Dr.) Iffat Hassan, Principal/Dean, GMC Srinagar; Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Ismail, Head of the Department of Medicine; heads of various departments; senior faculty members; senior residents; postgraduate students and other staff of the Department of Medicine. Prof. Bhat had a long and distinguished association with GMC Srinagar. He joined the institution as an undergraduate medical student in 1960 and subsequently served the college for several decades, eventually retiring as Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine. During his illustrious career, he made significant contributions to medical education, clinical medicine and patient care, leaving a lasting impression on generations of students, colleagues and patients. An accomplished author and widely respected teacher, Prof. Bhat was remembered for his deep knowledge of medicine, exceptional teaching abilities and commitment to professional ethics. Principal/Dean GMC Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Iffat Hassan, expressed profound sorrow over his demise and paid tribute to his distinguished contributions to the institution. She said Prof. Bhat’s contributions to medicine, teaching and patient care would remain an enduring part of the legacy of Government Medical College Srinagar. Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Ismail, Head of the Department of Medicine, described Prof. Bhat as an astute physician, accomplished academician, dedicated teacher and compassionate human being. He recalled Prof. Bhat’s ability to simplify complex clinical concepts and inspire students to develop sound clinical reasoning and uphold ethical standards in medical practice. Prof. Ismail further highlighted Prof. Bhat’s disciplined and rational approach to patient care, describing it as an example for generations of medical professionals. He also recalled his valuable contributions to medical education, particularly in the areas of Emergency Medicine and Hypertension. Heads of departments and faculty members, including Prof. (Dr.) Iqbal Saleem, Prof. (Dr.) Rakesh Kumar Koul, Prof. (Dr.) Ishrat Hussain Dar, Prof. (Dr.) Omar Farooq, Prof. (Dr.) Muzaffar Maqbool Rather, Prof. (Dr.) Arshad Hussain, Prof. (Dr.) Asifa Nazir, Prof. (Dr.) Lateef Ahmad Wani, Prof. (Dr.) Mehnaaz Sultan Khuroo, Prof. (Dr.) Salma Bhat, Prof. (Dr.) Arsalan F. Rashid, Prof. (Dr.) Bashir Ahmad Shah, Dr. Irfan Ali, Dr. Sobia Nisar, Dr. Javaid Ahmad Chachoo, Dr. Nazir Ahmad Pala and Dr. Aadil Hassan Sidiquee, among others, fondly recalled Prof. Bhat’s clinical expertise, humility, integrity and dedication to his students and patients. The speakers observed that Prof. Bhat’s enduring legacy would continue through the numerous doctors he taught and mentored, as well as through the professional and ethical values he imparted during his distinguished career. The Department of Medicine expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed to Almighty Allah to grant the departed soul the highest place in Jannat-ul-Firdous. Prayers were also offered for strength, patience and fortitude to the family to bear the irreparable loss. ANB
