SRINAGAR, June 4: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday attended the week-long Rang-e-Kashmir Cultural Festival in Srinagar, underscoring the importance of preserving Jammu and Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage and promoting its globally acclaimed handlooms and handicrafts. The festival, which brings together artisans, craftsmen, artists, buyers and cultural enthusiasts, showcases the region’s traditional crafts and artistic excellence while providing a platform for local talent and heritage-based industries. Addressing the gathering, the Lieutenant Governor described Jammu and Kashmir as “a living canvas” shaped by centuries of wisdom, innovation, artistry and craftsmanship. He said that a nation’s true strength is reflected not only in its economic or military capabilities but also in the richness of its culture, traditions and collective spirit. Highlighting the significance of cultural preservation, Sinha commended the efforts of the Pumbuch Cultural Heritage Foundation and its Director, Superna Sapru, for their contribution towards conserving, reviving and promoting the region’s artistic and cultural legacy. He noted that such initiatives help sustain traditional art forms and ensure that the voices of artisans and craftsmen continue to resonate across generations. The Lieutenant Governor emphasized that culture is a dynamic force that shapes society and connects communities with their roots. Referring to Jammu and Kashmir’s renowned woodwork, handloom, handicraft and papier-mâché traditions, he said the region’s artisans continue to preserve centuries-old cultural narratives through their craftsmanship. He also lauded the contribution of musicians and traditional artists in safeguarding the region’s cultural identity, describing them as custodians of heritage and continuity. Calling for greater engagement of youth with traditional arts and crafts, Sinha stressed that the future of Jammu and Kashmir’s cultural heritage depends on the younger generation. He said efforts must be intensified to connect youth with handloom, handicraft and artistic traditions so that this invaluable legacy is carried forward. During the event, the Lieutenant Governor felicitated several distinguished artists and artisans for their significant contributions to the promotion and preservation of Jammu and Kashmir’s cultural heritage. The festival was organised by the Pumbuch Cultural Heritage Foundation in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, Jammu and Kashmir.
