SKIMS to Recruit 1,200 Paramedical Staff, Director Stresses Nurses’ Role in Fighting Drug Abuse

Srinagar, May 16: Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Director and EOSG Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie on Friday announced that nearly 1,200 paramedical posts across various cadres are under consideration for recruitment at SKIMS, including around 500 positions for nursing staff, while highlighting the crucial role of healthcare workers in combating the growing drug menace. The announcement was made during celebrations marking International Nurses Day at the SKIMS Auditorium, where Prof. Ganie said the proposed recruitment drive is expected to substantially address the shortage of nursing staff at the institute within the next three months, reducing nearly 60 percent of the existing deficiency. He thanked all stakeholders, including the Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister administrations, for facilitating the recruitment process and said strengthening the healthcare workforce would significantly improve patient care management at SKIMS. Referring to this year’s International Nurses Day theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” Prof. Ganie said the institution is also planning to introduce a paid nursing internship programme aimed at empowering young nursing professionals and providing them with clinical exposure. Reaffirming his commitment towards the expansion and strengthening of SKIMS, the Director said new departments would be established and existing facilities upgraded to meet the growing healthcare demands of the region. Extending greetings to the nursing fraternity, Prof. Ganie praised nurses for their dedication, compassion and service towards patients. He said nurses could play a vital role in addressing the increasing drug abuse problem in society. Dean Medical Faculty SKIMS, Prof. Bashir Ahmad Fomda, said the event’s theme reflected a roadmap for the growth and development of the nursing fraternity and stressed the need for structural support, clinical autonomy and greater participation of nurses in decision-making processes. Additional Director SKIMS, Zahoor Ahmad Mir, appreciated the nursing staff for their dedication and contribution to patient care despite numerous challenges. Incharge Principal of Madre Meharban College of Nursing SKIMS, Prof. Maqbool, said the increasing participation of men in the nursing profession reflected a positive societal shift, while acknowledging the continued association of women with caregiving and compassion. Medical Superintendent SKIMS, Prof. Farooq Ahmad Jan, described nurses as the backbone of patient care and said the global recognition earned by SKIMS was largely due to the professionalism and dedication of its nursing staff. Medical Superintendents of SKIMS State Cancer Hospital and the Maternity Hospital also addressed the gathering and commended nurses for their tireless service and commitment towards patient welfare. Incharge Nursing Administration Mrs. Shafeeqa and Organising Secretary Mrs. Shameema Khan highlighted the pivotal role of nurses in the healthcare system and paid tribute to Florence Nightingale while thanking the administration and organising committee for the successful conduct of the event.
